Who am I ?

My name is Anne-Marie Girel

I was born in Lyon, at the Hôtel Dieu Hospital like any little "Lyonnais" at the time...

This hospital is ideal for photographers and it is also where I made my career

My hobbies are travelling, photos and sports

I’ve started travelling approx. 40 years ago. It allowed me to discover countries and areas that few had the chance to visit at the time. My friends keep saying me that they learn geography and discover the world with my photos.

I had the chance to make journeys with exceptional men who travelled through remote and difficult areas to access but they shared their experience with us and it was a time of adventure. Nowadays it's still possible but things are moving quickly and unspoiled areas are rarer...

I feel that my travels made me discover a world which my ancestors could not tell me about.

My favourite pictures are head-and-shoulders portraits which you'll find on this website because I believe they express humans' feelings.

I've mentioned the year when the pictures were taken. Still in 2005 ethnic groups with a very slow evolution could be found and documented.

I use the following material:

·         Minolta  9000

·         Minolta  Dynax  9

·         A telephoto lens  Minolta  75/300

·         A wide angle lens  Minolta  28/80

For animal pictures, I use a 600 nm angle with a mirror.

I also have now a camcorder Canon MVX350i for digital pictures.

   The films used are Ektachrome or Fujichrome Sensia, and film sensitivity goes from 200 to 400 Asa depending on the countries visited.

   Useless to tell you the weight of my handbag

Up to now I’ve stuck to argentique material because I can have poster 50 x 75 cm processed. It is not possible with digital cameras unless using a professional material.

All the pictures from this website come from my own collection that amounts to 600,000 side films. It will keep me busy for quite a while. Thus this website will constantly evolve.

All the pictures posted were taken with the persons’ agreement beforehand either for free – except for the Mursi tribe (South Ethiopia) – or after a useful gift was given. Most of the time it was agreed after smiles or “hand talk” which make everyone smile from ear to ear.
